Winnie Fern (Monroe) Land, age 82, passed away following a brief illness at her daughter Laura and her husband Richard's home in Dodson, LA on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Fern was born in Montgomery, LA on August 2, 1941 to the late E.H. and Lorna (Fletcher) Monroe. She was the oldest of five children. She is survived by sisters Phyllis (Huey) Diffey and Kathy (David) Werntz and brother Bill (Carol) Monroe. Preceding her in death was her brother, Ronnie (Paula) Monroe.

She graduated from Grand Cane High School and continued her education, receiving a BA in Secondary Education with a double major in English and French from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. Later in life, she went on to earn her Master's Plus 30 in English Literature. One of her greatest joys and accomplishments was that of being a teacher. It was her passion and it was something that she was truly gifted at doing. Her students always meant so much to her and through her love and compassion for those she taught, many lives were touched.

Fern was a life-long resident of Montgomery, LA. She was an active member of the Montgomery Church of Christ, where she taught a ladies Bible study class. Her faith was strong and the members there were so much more than friends. They were family and she loved them all dearly.

In Montgomery, Fern met and later married her one true love, the late Bobby Dale Land. They married April 11, 1963. They enjoyed a simple life and were never more happy than when they sat on the back porch watching the sunset on the Coon Trail.
Fern was a loving and kind mother and will be great missed by her children Damon (Michelle) Land, Nathan (Deanna) Land, and Laura (Richard) Broomfield. To her grandchildren, she will always be remembered as "Poo". She was an excellent grandmother and left her grandchildren with memories that will surely last a lifetime. Those left to cherish her memory are Amanda (James) Honea, Adrienne (Michael) Edwards, Hannah Land, Tucker Land, Noah (Summer) Land, Lusila (Aston) Lang, Semisi Halafihi, Robert Halafihi, Hunter McClendon, Leigh McClendon (Caroline) and Haley McClendon. She is also survived by 16 great grand children.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 9, 2023 at Church of Christ with Rev. Casey Clement officiating. Interment will follow in Hargis Cemetery, in Montgomery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and again  on Monday from 9:00 AM until time of services.

The family would like to thank ACG Hospice (Jonesboro, LA) and their outstanding staff for their care, love, and support during Mama's illness. They went above and beyond to not only provide excellent care for our mother, but also to our family. They are no longer just people we've met. We now consider them family. We never could have gotten through this difficult time without all of you.
