Richard Vern
Mcquillin
Nov 12, 1932 — Mar 1, 2024
Mr. Richard Vern McQuillin, age 91 of Montgomery, Louisiana, passed away on
Friday, March 1, 2024.
Born on Saturday, November 12, 1932 in Hargis, Louisiana, he is preceded in
death by his parents, Henry and Neta Britt McQuillin; nine siblings; and
grandson, Dalton McQuillin.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Glascock
McQuillin; sons, Rickey McQuillin (Robin), Kyle McQuillin (Elaine) and Ronald
McQuillin (Wendy); daughter, Cheryl Tyler (Chris); 13 grandchildren, 15
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard McQuillin was a man of many talents, hobbies, and occupations. At 18
he was drafted into the Korean War and served his country well. After returning
home he would later become a junior high science teacher. He taught for 22
years and his eyes would light up with joy when he spoke of his former students,
even decades after retirement. Richard's love of music enabled him to serve the
Lord as Music Director at Prospect, Montgomery, and Hargis Baptist Church for
many years. He played guitar from childhood until his very last days. He said it
was one of his most cherished gifts to still be able to play guitar. He also had a
love for the outdoors, with interests ranging from hunting, horses, and farming.
Rumor has it he was the best quail hunter around. But perhaps what Richard
McQuillin is most well known for is his watermelons. He grew watermelons for
decades, but after retirement, turned his watermelon farming into a very
successful business, with his largest seasons harvesting over 150 acres of the
sweetest watermelons in Central Louisiana. Richard was able to continue his
love of farming watermelons well into his 80s.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Hargis
