Mrs. Mary Marguriete Garlington Harvey of Houston, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023.  She was 100 years old. Marguriete was the daughter of Charlie Eugene Garlington and Mary Elize Mobley Garlington.  She was born on July 20, 1923 in Vienna, Louisiana. Before 1930, her family moved from their first homestead in Vienna to Quitman, Louisiana.  Marguriete attended Quitman High School where she loved playing basketball. She was the oldest girl of 9 children.

At the age of 14, Marguriete worked at the local tomato cannery for $.05 a bucket.  Shortly after she started, the child labor laws were passed and she was too young to work; she was not happy.  As a young adult during WWII, Marguriete worked in the armory counting boxes of ammunition on the train cars.  She then worked for the Southern Bag and Paper Company, a local paper mill in Hodge, Louisiana.

Marguriete was the wife of Preston L. Harvey, who she met at the local gas station after the Korean War when he was discharged from the Navy.  She was having a soda and he introduced himself.  They were married 6 months later in January 1953.  In 1954 they welcomed their first child, Kay Allen, and second in 1958, Richard Harvey.

In 1955 and again in 1959, they moved to Houston after traveling throughout Louisiana and Texas.  This was when Preston was working in oil and gas for Hycalog. They settled in Songwood, Houston, Texas, and lived there until 1995 and moved to Wood Forest, Houston, Texas.

Marguriete was a hair dresser and opened her own hair salon; Marguriete's Beauty Shop, in 1963 in Jacinto City, Texas. She owned it until 1988, but she continued working at the same location for another 15 years. Her two children, three grandchildren and first great granddaughter all worked in the beauty shop and helped out; from folding towels, sweeping hair, cleaning wash bowels and styling tools. She retired from hairdressing at the age of 91.

Marguriete an incredible work ethic and shared it with her family. She was a strong woman of faith who raised her family in loving light of Jesus Christ our Lord and God the father.  In 1955 she was a founding member of Market Street Baptist Church on Federal Road in Houston, Texas, and was their oldest member.

Her favorite bible verse was John 3:16, and her favorites songs are Sweet Beulah Land, Precious Memories, and How Great Thou Art. Her passions in life are her faith, family, friends, and card/board/domino games, quilting, and cooking.  She passed these along to her family and the importance of each. She believes strongly in her faith and the only way to a happy, healthy, life and road to Heaven is the Lord Almighty.

Marguriete is survived by: Marilyn Kay Harvey Allen, daughter; Richard Lambert Harvey, son; Tivona Laverne Cunningham, granddaughter; Preston Ryan Harvey, grandson; Brittany Nichole Harvey Cotton, granddaughter; Gianna Francesca Watson, great granddaughter; Case Cotton, great grandson; Avery Cotton, great granddaughter; Katie Joe Garlington Jordan, sister; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Preston Lambert Harvey, her husband; her parents and 7 siblings.

A visitation is scheduled for December 9, 2023 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro, Louisiana.  The procession will travel to Antioch Cemetery near Quitman, Louisiana for a 2:15 PM. Graveside service. Tivona Cunningham and Bro. Craig Stevens will officiate the service.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Market Street Baptist Church, 12964 Market St, Houston, TX 77015.

Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Harvey, Preston Harvey, Tristen Cotton, Joey Burnham, Buddy Stevenson and Richard Moak.
