Johnnie Mae Shaw

Johnnie Shaw, 82, of the Hargis community, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Lynn Croxton, Sr. and Elsie Merle Roan Croxton; her brother, Raymond Lynn Croxton, Jr.; and her nephews, Russell Croxton and Richard Lea.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Melvin Ray Shaw; her son, Mel Roan Shaw; her daughters, Lisa Airhart and her husband David, and Lynn Call and her husband Kimber; her grandchildren, Hallee Airhart Henry and her husband Jarred, Nathan Ray Airhart and his wife Trinity, Dani Anderson, Rhett Call, and Jackson Call; her great-grandchild, Eleanor Grace Henry; her sisters-in-law, Vicky Hamilton and her husband Bubba, and Judy Fogger; her brother-in-law, Lawrence Lea; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Johnnie spent her career as an educator. She began teaching Home Economics at Evergreen Junior High in Houma, Louisiana, and continued her teaching career in Grant Parish at Colfax High School, Dry Prong High School, and finally Montgomery High School, where she retired. She could cook about anything you asked her to. She made and decorated wedding cakes, was known for a famous punch reserved for special occasions, and could make clothes with or without a pattern.

She was a member of Hargis Baptist Church in Montgomery, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a period of time. She stayed at home as long as her health allowed. Her husband visited with her daily at the nursing home where he fed her lunch. In addition to her husband, Ms. Irene Lunsford and Judy Fogger, her sister in law both lovingly cared for Johnnie.
Johnnie enjoyed cooking for her family especially on Sundays after church. Former students still cherish and use her recipes from her home economics class. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and painting, as well as tending ferns which always grew beautifully under her care.

Funeral services will be held at Hargis Baptist Church on Thursday, September 24, 2026 with Rev. Bruce Weatherford and Rev. Doug James officiating. Graveside services will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, near Montgomery, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Thursday from 9:00 AM to service time.

Pallbearers will be Eric Skains, Jacob McManus, Kimber Call, David Airhart, Jarred Henry, and Paul Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers are Bubba Hamilton, David Jackson and Nathan Airhart.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Autumn Leaves Nursing and Rehab for the care they gave her over the last five years, and to Hand in Hand Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Johnnie and her family in her final days.
