Jerald Wayne Bamburg, age 80 of Winnfield, better known as "Coach," passed away Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Christus Highland Medical Center in Shreveport.

Coach Bamburg was born in Shreveport, LA, grew up in Natchez, MS, and graduated from Ferriday High School. He attended Louisiana Tech University and was a pitcher for the Bulldog baseball team. After graduating and marrying the love of his life, Jeanette Powers Bamburg, he began what would span more than fifty years as an educator and coach. His career began in Tallulah, and he coached in Benton, Ferriday, Georgetown, and Jonesboro. His longest tenure was with Winnfield Senior High School (first arriving 1966), where he taught everything but English, band, and business, served as principal, and coached every sport at one time or another. While he made quite a few state championship runs, winning a handful, his coaching was as much about winning in life as winning the game. His many friends tried to entice him to take up hobbies, but his hobby was his job: balls and kids. Later in life, he continued his calling to teach through Sunday School at First Baptist Church Winnfield, coached many a college game from his armchair, and enjoyed traveling and reading.

Coach Bamburg was preceded in death by his parents Bion Hampton Bamburg and Myrtis Rai Barksdale Bamburg and granddaughter Morgan Grady.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Jeanette Powers Bamburg, two children Rhonda Adams (Dennis) and Jay W. Bamburg (Amy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Winnfield with Dr. Jerry Pipes officiating.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Southern Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The family request in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations please be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield and or the athletics department of Winnfield Sr. High School.
