Helen Russell Brewton

Helen Russell Brewton of Winnfield, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 28, 2026, at the age of 83. She was born on December 4, 1942, in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip A. and Merle Burgess Russell of Benton, Mississippi; her brother, Phillip Russell of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; and her granddaughter, Mary Helen Cagle of Monroe, Louisiana.

She is survived by her son, Jason Brewton and his wife Karen of Monroe; her daughter, Rachel Brewton Cagle of New Orleans; and her granddaughter, Sally Grace Cagle of Baton Rouge.

Mrs. Brewton was graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1960 and Northeast Louisiana State College in 1965. She earned her master's degree +30 in education from Northwestern State University.

She began her teaching career in 1970, spending the majority of her tenure at Winnfield Senior High School. Mrs. Brewton is best known for her tireless efforts in producing outstanding FBLA officers and competitors. She retired in 2004 after positively impacting many students throughout her 34 years working in education.

After her retirement, Mrs. Brewton enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and watching movies. Her open door policy welcomed friends and neighbors who frequently gathered on her couches to laugh and visit deep into the night. She cherished any time spent with friends and family, and is described as fiercely loyal, occasionally blunt, but always loving and kind.

She also had a strong passion for football, specifically WSHS, LSU, and the New Orleans Saints. She possessed a flair for planning and taking trips in America and abroad, especially in the English Countryside and the beaches of the Florida Panhandle. She had a fondness for road trips with her friends; she was already ready to go at a moment's notice.

Mrs. Brewton’s faith was a guiding principle throughout her life. She was a dedicated member of the Dr. Wren Sunday School Class and the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi, and Alpha Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma society.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday evening, October 1, from five to seven at Christ Wesleyan Fellowship of Winn, located at 185 Highway 156, Winnfield, LA 71483. The memorial service will be held at the church the following morning, October 2, at eleven o’clock.
