Harvel Lee Sweat

Harvel Lee Sweat, born July 15, 1940, a longtime resident of the Jordan Hill and Georgetown communities, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Urania United Pentecostal Church, with Rev. Clay Hutto officiating. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service at the church from 9:00 AM until service time. Graveside services will follow in the Georgetown Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be, Masson Sweat, Christian Sweat, Devin Maxwell, Chaz Griffith, Kaage Griffith, and Zachary Sweat.

Harvel was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was deeply rooted in family, hard work, and his business.

Harvel was a skilled and respected saddlemaker and the proud owner of Sweat's Saddle Shop. His craft required patience, dedication, precision, and a true love for his work. Through his hands, he created saddles and leatherwork that became a lasting part of his legacy. His shop was more than a place of business; it was a reflection of his skill, character, and dedication to a craft in which he took great pride.

For Harvel, saddlemaking was not simply a profession; it was a craft he devoted his time and talent to perfecting. His work connected him with generations of people, and the pieces he created will continue to serve as reminders of the man who made them.

Harvel also had a deep passion for haymaking and working the land. He could often be found doing what he loved most-working with his John Deere tractor, making hay, and taking pride in a hard day's work. The sound of his tractor and the sight of him working the fields were a familiar part of the life he built. For Harvel, there was something special about being outdoors, working the land, and seeing the results of his own efforts.

Whether he was working leather in his shop or working the fields behind the wheel of his John Deere, Harvel believed in doing things with his own hands and doing them well. His dedication to his work, his land, and his family was a testament to the kind of man he was.

Those who knew Harvel will remember him not only for his craftsmanship, Sweat's Saddle Shop, haymaking, and his love of horses, but also for the life he shared with his family and the memories he created along the way. He was a man who understood the value of hard work, providing for the people he loved, and taking pride in what he built with his own hands.

Harvel was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Louise Clark Sweat; his parents, Clem Lee Sweatand Gertrude Lois Jenkins Sweat; his brother, Gene Sweat, and wife, Francis Barber Sweat; his sister, Nelda Sweat Williams, and husband, John T. Williams; and his grandson, Keith Griffith.

He leaves behind his loving family, including his children, Johnny Sweat (Kim), Lisa Marsden (Allen), and Angela Owens; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.

His family will remember the stories, the conversations, the laughter, and the countless moments that made him who he was. They will remember the craftsman in his saddle shop, the farmer on his John Deere, and, most importantly, the man who loved his family.

Harvel's passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, but his memory will continue through the generations of his family and through all those whose lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

Rest peacefully, Harvel. Your hands have finished their work, but the legacy you built through your family, your craft, your land, and Sweat's Saddle Shop will live on for generations to come.
