Mr. Gregory Alan Hemphill, age 57, passed away on February 6, 2025. He was born October 9, 1967 in Winnfield, Louisiana to Luther Ples and Muriel Jean Porter Hemphill. Those left ot cherish his memory are his wife of 22 years, Eileen Haynes Hemphill of Quitman, his daughters, Hannah Austin (Evan) of Winnfield and Caitlyn Williams (Jacob) of Saline; his son, Gavin Hall (Kaehtlyn) of Houston; siblings, Debbie Terral of Winnfield, Ronnie Hemphill (Kim) of Quitman, Karen Bevill (Bo) of Winnfield, and Kelley Lasyone (Lenard) of Bentley; six grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, and 9 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ples and Muriel Jean Porter Hemphill, and his great nieces Kaela Bevill.

Greg was a provider.

Above all, he put his wife and family first, and made sure they were always taken care of. He began working as soon as he was able and continued to do so until his body told him to take it to the house. Throughout his life he held many jobs, such as working on small engines, oil rigs, paper mills, then worked his way up to a construction manager, a position he held until he retired. He understood that his family was a priority and always treated them as such.

Greg was a father.

He loved and cherished the time he spent with his kids, and then with his grandkids later in life. He instilled in his children valuable life lessons, as well as the importance of family. And he leaves us having passed on something different to each one, whether it was physical features, hobbies and interests, or just the example of the wonderful man he was.

Greg was a brother.

The favored youngest child that his siblings would say got away with everything, but yet they all adored. He was the brother they raised alongside their own children, which turned into the fun uncle that was over at their house or tagging along on trips. He may have been the youngest of the five, but he was always loving, generous, and someone they could rely on.

Greg was a friend.

He loved having people over and he wanted you to stay awhile once you were there. He enjoyed cooking for his company and loved trying new things. Even on the phone, he would keep you talking for longer than anticipated, and the conversations were always worthwhile and genuine. Throughout the years he worked in many different places and made lasting friendships. He was always sad to leave behind the people he had worked with and shared a mutual respect for.

Greg was a jokester.

He loved playing tricks on people, and had a laugh that was both loud and infectious. He was voted class clown in high school, and later was known for the same amongst his coworkers. His playful nature showed through until his final days, drawing smiles and laughter from all of his caregivers and offering some reprieve for his family during a difficult time.

Greg was an outdoorsman.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, though if you spoke with him later in life then you probably heard him tell you, "I'm just not as mad at em as I used to be!" If he was off work, then he was outside. He could be found tinkering with small engines or welding machines, building things around the house, riding his buggy, cooking on his smoker, or just sitting on the porch. He enjoyed riding Harleys and taking trips with his brother and friends.

Greg was strong.

Throughout his illness, he pushed through every hardship and symptom. Many people did not even know he was ill. He worked through it all, and that is commendable, because even when his mind and body were fighting against him, providing for his family was top priority. When faced with hardship and pain, he continued to provide. Even when his body told him he couldn't, he pushed harder. His strength is enviable and worth remembering.

Greg's family would like to thank the staff of Allegiance Hospice Care of Northeast Louisiana for their wonderful care throughout this process. We are forever grateful for their support and assistance.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 9, 2025 at Southern Funeral Homes of Winnfield from 5:00PM until 8:00PM, and again on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Zion Baptist Church of Georgetown, from 12 noon until time of services.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, at the church with Rev. Brad Jones and Rev. Don Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
