Gene A. Sweat, age 86, of Winnfield, Louisiana, passed from this life on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Winnfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born on December 9, 1938, in Georgetown, Louisiana, Gene was a retired oilfield worker and a longtime, faithful member of East Winnfield Baptist Church. He served his church community for many years, including as a dedicated nursery worker, caring for its youngest members with quiet devotion. A man of many talents and creative gifts, Gene was also known for painting baptistery scenes for several churches throughout Winn Parish. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, knife making, and vegetable gardening.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances Barber Sweat; his parents, Clem Lee Sweat and Gertrude Jenkins Sweat; his sister, Nelda Williams, and her husband John T. Williams; his sister-in-law, Louise Clark Sweat; his daughter-in-law, Cindy Miller Sweat; and his grandson, Justin Matthew Sweat.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Mark Sweat and Michael D. Sweat and wife Debbie; grandchildren Cody, Allison, Anna, Lydia, Megan, and Olivia; fourteen great-grandchildren; his brother, Harvel Lee Sweat; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield with Reverends Bruce Cardin and Jeff Shows officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery in Joyce.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Williams, Jonathan Guerreo, James Hudson, Ethan Bedgood, Hayden Sweat, and Robert Johns.
