David M. (Sonny) Rhymes passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson Parish. David graduated with the class of 1962 from Jonesboro-Hodge High School. After graduating, David worked at the paper mill in Hodge for approximately two years. He then entered the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd class. He served his country on the aircraft carriers, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Shangrila and the John F. Kennedy. He served his shore duty at Kingsville, TX, Memphis, TN and Jacksonville FL. He served August 1965-August 1969.
After leaving the Navy, he worked in Dallas, TX for a few months before returning to Jonesboro to work at the mill in Hodge for another two years. He then got a job with the enforcement department of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in 1972 and he retired in 1993.
David then went to work driving a school bus for the Jackson Parish School Board. He also delivered commodities to the different schools in the parish and did odd jobs around the school board office.
David was preceded in death by his father, William Jennings Rhymes, Sr.; mother, Vera Ruth Walsworth Rhymes; brothers, Jamie Rhymes, Earl Rhymes, Johnny Rhymes, Ray Wilford Rhymes, William Jennings (Bill) Rhymes,Jr., Donald Wayne Rhymes, Harvey George Rhymes; sisters, Betty Ruth Rhymes Evans, Sara Rose Rhymes Brossett and Shirley Jo Rhymes Williams.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Sissy) G. Rhymes; sons, Jamie Ray Rhymes and wife Amy of Warrior, AL, Marcus Rhymes and wife Crystal of West Monroe, LA,; daughter, Jenny Finch and husband Shea of Shreveport, LA; Skip Hines and wife Sharon of Quitman, LA; Patricia Hines of Calhoun, LA; grandchildren, Alexis and Amber Rhymes, Van Rhymes, Caleb and Christian Finch, Mary Ramirez and David Morgan and Noah and Ellie Brown, respectively.; sisters, Pat Gilbreth and husband Wes of Houston, TX and Jerrie Allen of Denton, TX. David is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:00AM Friday, July 20, 2012 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel, Jonesboro with Reverend Joey Bignar officiating. Friends may visit with the family 5:00PM until 7:00PM Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the McDonald Cemetery, Jonesboro.
